What is a Plate Type Fresh Water Generator
Plate type fresh water generator is also known as marine fresh water generator. It is a device that uses a plate heat exchanger to produce fresh water from seawater. Seawater is passed through the plate heat exchanger, which transfers heat from a hot fluid (such as engine cooling water) to the seawater.
This process causes the seawater to evaporate and condense on a separate surface, producing fresh water. Plate type fresh water generators are commonly used on marine vessels to provide a reliable and sustainable source of fresh water for drinking, cooking, and other purposes.
How Does a Plate Type Fresh Water Generator Work
A plate type fresh water generator works by utilizing a plate heat exchanger to produce fresh water from seawater. Here are the basic steps of how it works.
First, Seawater is drawn into the generator and pumped through a plate heat exchanger, which is a series of stacked metal plates that are separated by small spaces. Hot fluid, such as engine cooling water, is also circulated through the plate heat exchanger in a separate channel.
The heat is transferred from the hot fluid to the seawater through the metal plates of the heat exchanger. This causes the seawater to be heated and evaporated. Then, the evaporated seawater rises and condenses on a separate surface, which is usually a set of cooler plates. This process produces fresh water, which is then collected and stored for use. The remaining concentrated seawater, which is now denser due to the removal of freshwater, is discharged back into the ocean.
Plate type fresh water generators are highly efficient because they use the waste heat from other systems on board the ship to heat the seawater, reducing the energy required for the process. They are also compact and require less space compared to other freshwater generators, making them a popular choice for marine vessels.

The Plate Type Fresh Water Generator is composed of an evaporator, condenser, vacuum ejector, and relevant system accessories. The control system adheres to the maker’s standard and includes a specialized salinity meter with temperature compensation.
The design accounts for rough sea conditions with a seawater temperature of 32℃ and a cylinder jacket cooling water temperature of 80℃. Despite these challenging conditions, the unit has a distillate production capacity of 12 t/d. Each unit features an evaporator and condenser installed in the same chamber.

The Plate Type Fresh Water Generator is primarily comprised of an evaporating chamber, a condensing chamber, a vacuum ejector, and a fresh water pump for conveying distilled water to a storage tank.
The heat exchanger, which is made of titanium, enables energy conservation by leveraging the jacket water heat and the lower boiling point of water within a vacuum environment.
